In the Middle Ages, Suceava used to be the capital city of the historical region Moldavia. At the east of the city, situated on a 70 meters tall plateau, lies the Seat Fortress of Suceava, built by ruler Petru I Musat and fortified by Stephen the Great. The fortress is in ruins, as it was destroyed in the 17^th century by ruler Dumitrasco Cantacuzino, at the orders of the Ottoman Empire. Another citadel, situated in the west of the city is Scheia, also lying in ruins in the present.
